Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) has
defended the manner the national
publicity secretary, Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Olisa
Metuh was treated when he appeared
for his trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja in Handcuffs on Tuesday,
January 19. Olisa Metuh is alleged to have received
N400m, part of the money meant for the
procurement of arms, from the Office of the
National Security Adviser in November 2014. According to the NPS, putting handcuffs was
at the discretion of the prison officer, who
supervised his court appearance. The spokesperson for the NPS, Francis
Enobore, who gave the clarification in a phone
conversation with The Punch dismissed
allegations by the PDP that the service mistreated Metuh all in a bid to play out a script
orchestrated by President Muhammadu
Buhari. He said: “Handcuffing an inmate is at the discretion of the officer in-charge,
depending on the security situation and
environment.
